Super Visa Overview

What is a
Super Visa?

The Super Visa is a special multiple-entry visitor pathway for parents and grandparents of Canadian citizens, permanent residents, and eligible registered Indians in Canada.

Unlike a standard visitor visa, which usually allows shorter stays, the Super Visa may allow eligible parents and grandparents to stay in Canada for up to 5 years at a time.

The application requires coordination between the parent or grandparent abroad and the Canadian host in Canada. The host must meet income requirements and provide a signed invitation letter, while the applicant must meet visitor requirements, insurance requirements, medical requirements, and admissibility rules.

At Hakam Immigration Services, we help Canadian families prepare coordinated Super Visa applications with clear host documents, visitor documents, insurance evidence, and family relationship proof.

Super Visa vs Visitor Visa

Longer stays need
stronger preparation.

Both options allow temporary visits to Canada, but the Super Visa is designed specifically for parents and grandparents who need longer stays.

The applicant must be outside Canada when submitting the Super Visa application.

Have Private Health Insurance

The applicant must show proof of private health insurance valid for at least 1 year from the date of entry, from a Canadian insurer or an insurer outside Canada approved by the minister.

Be an Eligible Host in Canada

The host must be the applicant’s child or grandchild and must be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or registered Indian who is at least 18 and lives in Canada.

✓

Meet Minimum Necessary Income

The host must meet or exceed the minimum necessary income requirement based on the applicable family size and current IRCC rules.

✓

Provide a Signed Invitation Letter

The invitation letter should include financial support details, family size information, and proof that the host meets the income requirement.

✓

Provide Proof of Relationship and Status

The host must provide documents confirming Canadian status and the family relationship to the parent or grandparent.

How it works

From host documents
to travel planning.

A strong Super Visa application requires documents from both the Canadian host and the parent or grandparent applying from outside Canada.

1

Confirm Host Eligibility

We review the host’s Canadian status, family size, income documents, and relationship to the applicant.

2

Prepare the Invitation and Support Package

The Canadian host prepares the signed invitation letter, income documents, proof of status, and proof of relationship.

3

Arrange Health Insurance

The parent or grandparent must have qualifying private health insurance for at least 1 year from the date of entry.

4

Complete Medical Requirements

The applicant must complete the immigration medical examination required for the Super Visa.

5

Submit the Application Online

The application is submitted with applicant documents, host documents, insurance proof, relationship proof, forms, fees, and biometrics where required.

6

Travel and Entry to Canada

If approved, the parent or grandparent can travel to Canada and must be ready to show insurance and supporting documents at entry.

If your parent or grandparent is already in Canada, we help review extension options before status expires.

Common questions

Super Visa
answered.

How long can my parents stay on a Super Visa?
If eligible and admitted to Canada, parents and grandparents may be allowed to stay for up to 5 years at a time. The final entry decision is made at the border.
What income do I need for a Super Visa?
The host must meet or exceed the minimum necessary income based on the applicable family size and current IRCC requirements. The exact threshold should be checked before applying.
What medical insurance is required?
The applicant must show proof of private health insurance valid for at least 1 year from the date of entry, from a Canadian insurer or an insurer outside Canada approved by the minister.
Can parents extend their stay beyond the authorized period?
They may be able to apply to extend their stay before their visitor status expires. Extension strategy should be reviewed before the expiry date.
Is the Super Visa the same as sponsoring parents for PR?
No. The Super Visa is temporary. It allows eligible long visits, but it does not grant permanent residence. Parent and grandparent sponsorship is a different pathway.
Can both parents apply together?
Yes. Both parents can apply, but each applicant must meet the requirements and provide their own application documents, medical exam, and insurance evidence.
