CEC Overview

Canadian work experience
turned into PR strategy.

The Canadian Experience Class is one of the three immigration programs managed through Canada’s Express Entry system.

It is designed for people who have already gained skilled work experience in Canada. This includes many PGWP holders, temporary foreign workers, and international graduates who transitioned into skilled employment after their studies.

At Hakam Immigration Services, we help candidates confirm CEC eligibility, review their CRS score, identify document risks, and build a stronger Express Entry strategy before relying on the profile.

Who qualifies?

CEC eligibility depends
on the details.

01 Core Requirement

Skilled Canadian Work Experience

You need at least one year of skilled Canadian work experience within the relevant period, gained while authorized to work in Canada.

Common applicants PGWP holders and temporary workers →

Many CEC candidates gained experience after studying in Canada or while working on an eligible work permit.

Key risk Hours, dates, and authorization matter →

The work history must be supported by accurate employment records and consistent documentation.

02 Occupation Review

Eligible TEER Classification

Your work must fall within an eligible skilled occupation. The job title alone is not enough duties and responsibilities are critical.

Important Duties must match the NOC →

Officer review focuses on the actual role and duties, not just the title on the employment letter.

Common issue Wrong NOC can create risk →

A weak or incorrect NOC choice can undermine the application even if the candidate worked in Canada.

03 Language

Minimum Language Requirements

CEC candidates must meet the required language level for their occupation category. Higher language scores can also improve CRS competitiveness.

Test required Approved language test →

Applicants need valid approved test results such as IELTS, CELPIP, TEF, or TCF, depending on the language.

Strategy Higher scores may change the outcome →

Language improvement can sometimes be the fastest way to raise CRS and improve invitation chances.

CEC strategy

Canadian experience helps
but it is not enough by itself.

Many CEC candidates assume that one year of Canadian experience automatically means an invitation. In reality, CRS score, language results, profile accuracy, NOC choice, and timing can all affect the outcome.

CRS

Score Competitiveness

Your CRS score determines how competitive you are in the Express Entry pool.

Language

Language Scores

Higher language scores can significantly affect your CRS and invitation chances.

NOC

TEER Accuracy

Your job duties and classification must be aligned with the occupation claimed.

PGWP

Status Timing

PGWP expiry and maintained status planning can become critical if timing is tight.

PNP

Provincial Options

If CRS is low, a PNP strategy may be worth exploring alongside CEC.

Documents

Employment Evidence

Reference letters, duties, hours, dates, and pay records should support the work history claimed.

How CEC works

From Canadian work
to permanent residence.

1

Confirm your work experience qualifies

Review your Canadian work history, TEER classification, dates, hours, and authorization to work.

2

Take an approved language test

CEC requires valid language results, and stronger scores may improve CRS competitiveness.

3

Calculate your CRS score

Review whether your profile is competitive or whether you need improvement or an alternative strategy.

4

Create or update your Express Entry profile

The profile should be accurate, consistent, and supported by the documents you can later provide.

5

Receive an invitation and submit PR

After an invitation, the full PR application must be prepared carefully and submitted within the deadline.

answered.

Does PGWP work experience count toward CEC?
Work experience gained on a Post-Graduation Work Permit may count if it meets the program requirements, including skilled occupation, timing, authorization, and supporting documentation.
Can I count experience from more than one employer?
In many cases, qualifying Canadian work experience can come from more than one employer, but the hours, dates, duties, and authorization must be reviewed carefully.
Do I need an ECA for CEC?
An Educational Credential Assessment is not always required for basic CEC eligibility, but it may help increase CRS points if you want to claim foreign education.
What if my occupation is not eligible?
If the occupation is not eligible, you may need to review the NOC classification, consider a different work strategy, or explore Provincial Nominee Programs and other PR pathways.
Can I apply while still working in Canada?
Yes, many CEC candidates continue working while pursuing Express Entry, provided they maintain valid authorization and meet the program requirements.
