Visitor Status & Refusal Support

Timing changes
everything.

Visitor status problems are time-sensitive. If your authorized stay is expiring, the right step may be a visitor record application. If your status has already expired, restoration may be required.

If your visitor visa or Super Visa was refused, the issue is different. The priority is not simply reapplying quickly — it is understanding the officer’s concerns and materially improving the next application.

A visitor record is not a visa. It allows you to stay longer in Canada as a visitor, but it does not guarantee re-entry if you leave Canada.

At Hakam Immigration Services, we help visitors in Canada and refused applicants abroad understand their situation, act on time, and avoid repeating preventable mistakes.

These are three different problems. Each one requires a different strategy, documents, and level of urgency.

01

My authorized stay is expiring soon

You are still in Canada legally, but your authorized stay is coming to an end.

You may need to apply for a visitor record before your current status expires. If submitted before expiry, you may be able to remain in Canada under maintained status while IRCC processes the application.

What to do

Apply before your authorized stay expires. Include a clear reason for staying longer, proof of current status, passport documents, financial support, and any relevant family or personal evidence.

02

My status has already expired

You remained in Canada beyond your authorized stay without applying in time.

You may need restoration of temporary resident status. Restoration is more limited than an extension and normally must be requested within 90 days of losing status.

What to do

Do not delay. You need to review whether restoration is still available, explain what happened, confirm that you otherwise qualify, and avoid taking unauthorized steps while out of status.

03

My visitor visa or Super Visa was refused

You applied from outside Canada and received a refusal decision.

A refusal is not necessarily final, but reapplying with the same evidence usually does not solve the problem. The refusal reasons must be reviewed before preparing a stronger file.

What to do

Review the refusal letter carefully. Identify the real concerns behind the decision, then address them with stronger evidence around purpose of visit, funds, home-country ties, travel history, and credibility.

Visitor record

Extending your
visitor stay.

If you want to stay in Canada longer as a visitor, you generally need to apply for a visitor record before your current status expires.

1

Check Your Authorized Stay Date

If no specific date was stamped in your passport, many visitors are authorized for up to 6 months from the date they entered Canada, subject to their passport validity and entry documents.

2

Apply Before Your Status Expires

Applying before expiry is critical. If the application is submitted on time, you may legally remain in Canada under maintained status until IRCC makes a decision.

3

Explain Why You Need More Time

The application should clearly explain why you need to remain longer and why your stay remains temporary.

4

Provide Supporting Evidence

Evidence may include passport documents, proof of funds, family circumstances, travel plans, medical or personal documents, and proof you can support yourself without working.

5

Wait for IRCC’s Decision

If approved, the visitor record will show a new expiry date. If refused, you must take the next step carefully and avoid remaining in Canada without authorization.

!
Important status warning

If your status expires before you apply, you may lose temporary resident status. Restoration may be possible in some cases, but it is more limited and should be addressed quickly.

Refusal support

Why visitor applications
get refused.

Book Refusal Review →

Most visitor visa and Super Visa refusals come down to recurring officer concerns. The right reapplication strategy starts with identifying which concerns apply to your file.

Most Common

Weak Home-Country Ties

Officers may not be satisfied that you will leave Canada at the end of your authorized stay.

Financial

Insufficient Funds

Your financial evidence may not clearly show enough resources for travel, accommodation, living costs, and return travel.

Purpose

Unclear Purpose of Visit

A vague, inconsistent, or poorly supported reason for visiting Canada can create credibility concerns.

History

Previous Refusals or Violations

Prior refusals, overstays, or immigration issues must be disclosed and addressed properly.

Documents

Incomplete or Inconsistent File

Missing documents or inconsistencies between forms, letters, bank records, and travel plans can weaken the application.

Admissibility

Admissibility Concerns

Criminal, medical, or immigration-related concerns may require a separate strategy before reapplying.

Restoration of status

If your status
already expired.

Restoration is not the same as a normal extension. It is usually available only within a limited window and requires a careful explanation.

1

Confirm the Expiry Date

We identify when your status was lost and whether the restoration window may still be available.

2

Review What Happened

The application should explain why status was lost, what conditions were met before expiry, and why restoration should be granted.

3

Confirm You Still Qualify

You must still meet the requirements for the temporary resident status you are trying to restore.

4

Prepare a Strong Explanation

Restoration files need clear facts, supporting documents, and an honest explanation of the circumstances.

5

Submit Quickly

Timing is critical. Waiting too long can remove restoration as an option and may require leaving Canada.

Common questions

Extension, Restoration
& Refusal Questions

Can I stay in Canada while my visitor extension is being processed?
If you applied before your authorized stay expired, you may be able to remain in Canada under maintained status until IRCC makes a decision on your visitor record application.
What happens if my visitor status already expired?
You may need to apply for restoration of status if you are still within the allowed period and otherwise meet the requirements. Restoration is not guaranteed and should be assessed quickly.
Can I reapply immediately after a visitor visa refusal?
There is no automatic waiting period, but reapplying immediately with the same evidence is usually weak. The refusal reasons should be addressed first.
How do I know why my visitor visa was refused?
The refusal letter gives the stated reasons, but the wording is often general. A proper review looks at the reasons, your forms, documents, facts, and what evidence was missing or weak.
Does a visitor visa refusal affect future applications?
It can. A refusal becomes part of your immigration history and must be disclosed in future applications. The key is addressing the underlying concerns clearly and truthfully.
Can I extend Super Visa status from inside Canada?
A parent or grandparent in Canada may be able to apply to extend their authorized stay before it expires. The strategy should be reviewed before the expiry date.
