What is Permanent Residence?

The right to live, work,
and stay for good.

Permanent residence gives you the right to live, work, and study anywhere in Canada without being tied to a specific employer, school, permit, or expiry date. It is the foundation for long-term stability in Canada and a major step toward Canadian citizenship.

Canada's immigration system offers several distinct pathways to permanent residence. Each pathway has its own eligibility criteria, risks, evidence requirements, and processing considerations.

At Hakam Immigration Services, we help you identify the strongest available pathway for your profile and avoid wasting time on a weak or unsuitable application strategy.

Common questions

Permanent Residence
answered.

What is the difference between a work permit and permanent residence?
A work permit is temporary and normally has conditions and an expiry date. Permanent residence allows you to live, work, and study anywhere in Canada indefinitely, subject to maintaining your residency obligations.
Can I apply for permanent residence while in Canada on a work permit?
Yes. Many PR pathways are available to people already in Canada, including Canadian Experience Class, Provincial Nominee Programs, and Family Sponsorship. You do not need to leave Canada to apply in most cases.
Do I need a job offer to apply for permanent residence?
Not always. Some pathways do not require a job offer, while others may benefit from or require employer support. The answer depends on the program and your profile.
What if my CRS score is low?
A low CRS score does not always mean there is no pathway. Provincial Nominee Programs, language improvement, education upgrades, or Canadian work experience may open additional options.
Can my family be included in my permanent residence application?
In many PR applications, your spouse or common-law partner and dependent children may be included as accompanying family members. The correct approach depends on your family situation and the type of application.
Which consultation should I book for PR?
If you are preparing or reviewing a PR pathway such as Express Entry, PNP, CEC, or FSW, book the PR Application Review. If your case is complex or does not fit a standard stream, start with a general consultation.
