Visa
Planning a visit to Canada? If your country requires a visa, a well-prepared Temporary Resident Visa application is your first step — and the quality of your application determines whether you get there.
Visitor Visa Overview
What is a
visitor visa?
A Temporary Resident Visa — commonly called a visitor visa — is an official document placed in your passport that authorizes you to travel to Canada and seek entry at the border.
It is required for citizens of many countries who want to visit Canada for tourism, family visits, or short-term business purposes.
A visitor visa does not guarantee entry into Canada. A border officer makes the final decision when you arrive. However, having a valid visa means IRCC has already assessed your application and determined that you meet the temporary resident requirements.
At Hakam Immigration Services, we help applicants prepare complete, well-documented visitor visa applications that clearly demonstrate the purpose of the visit and the intention to return home.
Do you need one?
Visa required
or visa exempt?
Whether you need a visitor visa depends on your nationality, travel document, immigration history, and how you plan to travel to Canada.
You may need a visitor visa if:
- Your country is on Canada’s visa-required list
- You are flying to or transiting through Canada
- You are applying after a previous refusal or complex immigration history
- You need a Temporary Resident Visa before travelling to Canada
Most applicants from many parts of Africa, the Middle East, South Asia, and Asia require a visitor visa before travelling to Canada.
You may not need one if:
- You hold a passport from a visa-exempt country
- You are a US citizen travelling to Canada
- You may qualify for an Electronic Travel Authorization instead
- You are a Canadian permanent resident returning to Canada
Visa-exempt travellers flying to Canada usually need an Electronic Travel Authorization, except US citizens.
Officer assessment
What IRCC looks for
in your application.
Visitor visa officers assess whether your visit is credible, temporary, financially supported, and consistent with your personal circumstances.
Strong Ties to Your Home Country
Officers must be satisfied that you will leave Canada when your authorized stay ends. Employment, family, property, financial obligations, and community ties can all help demonstrate this intent.
Sufficient Financial Resources
You must show that you can cover your trip — accommodation, transportation, living expenses, and return travel — without needing to work in Canada.
Clear Purpose of Visit
Your application must clearly explain why you are visiting Canada. A vague or unconvincing purpose of visit is a common reason for refusal.
Travel History
A history of travel to other countries can help show that you are a reliable traveller who respects immigration conditions.
Admissibility
You must not have a criminal, medical, or immigration issue that would prevent entry to Canada. Previous refusals or immigration violations must be declared.
How it works
How to apply
for a visitor visa.
Most visitor visa applications are submitted online. A strong file should be complete, consistent, and supported by documents that directly address the officer’s concerns.
Confirm You Need a Visa
Verify that your nationality requires a visitor visa to enter Canada. If you are visa-exempt, you may need an eTA instead.
Gather Your Documents
Collect your passport, financial statements, employment or enrollment letters, travel itinerary, invitation letter if applicable, and supporting documents for your profile.
Prepare the Application
Complete the forms accurately and organize your documents so the officer can clearly understand your purpose, finances, ties, and travel plan.
Provide Biometrics
Most applicants are required to provide biometrics at a designated application centre. Biometrics are generally valid for a set period once completed.
Receive a Decision and Travel
If approved, you can travel to Canada and seek entry at the border within the visa validity period.
