Open Work Permit Overview

Flexibility does not mean
automatic eligibility.

An open work permit allows eligible foreign nationals to work in Canada without being restricted to one specific employer, occupation, or location.

Unlike an employer-specific work permit, an open work permit gives you the flexibility to change employers without applying for a new permit, as long as you continue to respect the conditions on your permit.

Open work permits usually do not require a Labour Market Impact Assessment, and many categories do not require a job offer. However, you must still qualify under a recognized category.

At Hakam Immigration Services, we help you confirm whether you qualify, prepare the right evidence, and connect your work authorization to your long-term immigration strategy.

General eligibility

You must qualify under
the right category.

Each open work permit category has its own requirements. Most applicants must still satisfy these general conditions.

✓

Qualify Under an Eligible Category

You must fit a recognized open work permit category. Wanting to work in Canada is not enough by itself.

✓

Valid Travel Document

Your passport should be valid for the period of work authorization you are seeking, because permit validity can be limited by passport expiry.

✓

Admissibility to Canada

Criminal, medical, or immigration history issues can affect eligibility and should be reviewed before applying.

✓

Temporary Resident Intent

Many applicants must satisfy IRCC that they will respect the conditions of their stay and leave Canada if required.

✓

Category-Specific Evidence

Spousal permits, bridging permits, IEC permits, and other categories each require different supporting documents.

How to apply

The process depends
on your category.

The exact process varies, but most open work permit applications follow this general sequence.

1

Confirm Your Eligible Category

We identify which open work permit category fits your current status, immigration history, and documents.

2

Gather Supporting Documents

Documents may include relationship evidence, PR application proof, IEC invitation documents, status documents, or other category-specific evidence.

3

Prepare the Forms and Evidence

The forms, documents, explanations, and supporting evidence should match the category being claimed.

4

Submit the Application

Most applicants submit online through IRCC, including forms, documents, fees, and biometrics if required.

5

Receive the Permit and Start Working

Once approved, you can work according to the conditions listed on your open work permit.
